EQ Q factor explained

Q factor controls how narrow or wide an EQ band feels in the mix.

The width of an EQ band

Q factor describes the bandwidth of an EQ bell or filter. High Q means a narrow move; low Q means a wider move across more nearby frequencies.

The same gain change can sound surgical or broad depending on the Q setting.

Narrow for problems, wide for tone

Narrow cuts are useful for resonances and whistles. Wider boosts or cuts usually feel more natural for shaping body, presence, brightness, or warmth.

Extreme Q settings can make EQ decisions harder to translate because they emphasize details that may not matter in the full mix.

Compare in context

Solo helps identify a frequency, but the full mix tells whether the move improves balance or only sounds impressive in isolation.

Meter Core keeps level and peak changes visible while EQ moves are compared at matched loudness.
