A notch filter removes a narrow band while leaving nearby frequencies mostly intact.
A notch filter is a very narrow EQ cut used to reduce a specific frequency. It is useful for ringing resonances, hum components, feedback tones, and whistle-like harshness.
Because the cut is narrow, it can solve a focused problem without reshaping the whole source.
Sweep carefully, then reduce the gain until the problem stops calling attention to itself. Deep cuts can create a hollow or phasey sound if they remove musical tone.
If many notches are needed, the source, mic position, arrangement, or monitoring may be the real issue.
A notch can reduce peak energy at one frequency without changing perceived loudness much. It can also make the source seem cleaner simply because it is less sharp.
