What is a multiband crossover?

Crossovers decide where a multiband processor divides the spectrum.

Splitting audio into bands

A multiband crossover separates audio into frequency ranges so each band can be processed independently. Multiband compressors, dynamic EQs, and some limiters all rely on this idea.

The crossover frequency and filter design affect how smoothly those bands recombine.

Band splits can change the mix

Moving a crossover can change tone, punch, stereo behavior, and phase response even before heavy compression happens.

If a crossover sits directly on a vocal body, snare weight, or bass fundamental, small setting changes can feel bigger than expected.

Set bands around the problem

Choose crossover points that isolate the issue without chopping through the main identity of the sound. Then check gain reduction and bypass at matched loudness.
