What is multiband compression?

Multiband compression applies different compression behavior to separate frequency ranges.

Compression split by frequency

A multiband compressor divides the signal into lows, mids, highs, or more bands. Each band can have its own threshold, ratio, attack, release, and gain.

That lets you control boomy lows, sharp upper mids, or bright peaks without compressing the entire signal equally.

It can reshape the mix

Because each band moves independently, multiband compression can change tonal balance and groove if pushed too hard.

A mix may become smaller, duller, or less stable even though the meter shows more control.

Solve a specific band problem

Use multiband compression when a frequency range needs dynamic control that static EQ or broadband compression cannot handle cleanly.
