The processors divide audio differently
A multiband compressor splits the signal into adjacent bands and applies dynamics within each region. Dynamic EQ changes the gain of one or more filter shapes when their detectors respond.
Multiband crossovers affect the whole spectrum at their boundaries. A dynamic EQ band can leave more of the surrounding signal untouched.
Choice
Broad movement and narrow problems need different tools
Multiband compression suits broad low, mid, or high regions that need independent density control. Dynamic EQ is often better for a resonance or tonal area that appears only sometimes.
Either tool can sound phasey, dull, or unstable when its range and timing are too aggressive.
Workflow
Use the fewest moving bands that work
Identify the changing region, start with small gain range, and level-match bypass. Listen for crossover coloration, transient changes, and balance outside the problem band.
