Why do plosives make voiceover meters jump?

Plosives create short low-frequency bursts that can hit peaks long before the voice sounds loud.

Low-frequency bursts dominate the peak meter

P and B sounds can send a burst of air into the microphone. That burst may not sound like useful voice level, but it can trigger compressors, limiters, and true-peak warnings.

If you normalize or limit around those spikes, the rest of the voice can end up quieter than expected.

Inspect peaks against speech loudness

Watch peak and short-term loudness while scanning plosive-heavy phrases. A few bursts should not define the whole voiceover level.

Check the exported file too, because steep plosives can create encoding and true-peak issues.

Control plosives before final level

Use mic technique, clip gain, high-pass filtering, or targeted plosive repair before compression and limiting. Then set final loudness from the actual speech body.
