Minimum-phase EQ explained

Minimum-phase EQ is the everyday EQ behavior used by most analog-style and zero-latency EQs.

Frequency and phase move together

Minimum-phase EQ changes tone while also shifting phase around the adjusted frequencies. That phase movement is part of how most analog EQs and many digital EQs behave.

It is usually natural, low-latency, and practical for normal mixing decisions.

Different from linear phase

Linear-phase EQ preserves phase relationships more evenly, but it can add latency and pre-ringing. Minimum-phase EQ avoids that pre-ringing but changes phase around the filter.

Neither mode is automatically better. The source, filter shape, and context decide which tradeoff matters.

Listen in context

Phase shift from minimum-phase EQ is often harmless or musically useful, but it can matter on parallel paths, multi-mic drums, or layered low end.
