What is a low-pass filter?

A low-pass filter reduces high frequencies above a chosen cutoff.

High-frequency reduction above the cutoff

A low-pass filter lets lower frequencies pass while attenuating material above the cutoff frequency.

The slope controls how quickly the highs are reduced, so a gentle filter feels different from a steep one even at the same cutoff.

It can create space or make a sound dull

Low-pass filtering can remove hiss, soften harsh layers, tuck effects behind a lead, or keep low-priority parts away from the vocal range.

Used too aggressively, it can erase air, reduce transient clarity, and make a mix feel smaller than intended.

Set the cutoff in the full mix

Move the cutoff while the full mix plays, then back off before the part loses its role. Solo checks can lead to filters that are too dark.
