What is a high-pass filter?

A high-pass filter reduces low frequencies below its cutoff while leaving higher content mostly intact.

Letting highs pass

A high-pass filter, often called an HPF, attenuates frequencies below a chosen cutoff. Engineers use it to remove rumble, plosives, handling noise, or unnecessary low-end buildup.

The cutoff frequency and slope decide how much low content is removed and how quickly the filter takes effect.

Cleanup can become thinning

High-passing every channel by habit can make a mix smaller, especially when sources rely on low-mid weight for body.

Set the filter while listening in context, then bypass it to confirm the source improved rather than simply got brighter.

Protect headroom and translation
