Boosts add real signal level
An EQ boost raises part of the signal, which can push channel peaks, bus peaks, or plugin inputs above the available headroom.
The mix may not sound obviously louder overall, but a narrow presence boost or low-end shelf can still create overloads at the next processor.
Diagnosis
Compare level before and after the EQ
Watch the level entering and leaving the EQ, then bypass at matched loudness. If the EQ version is simply louder, the tonal choice is mixed with a gain change.
Pay extra attention to boosts before compressors, clippers, and limiters because those processors react to the new level.
Fix
Use output trim or gain compensation
Pull down the EQ output, reduce unnecessary boosts, or use subtractive moves when the same tonal result can be reached without adding as much level.
