EQ gain compensation keeps a tone change from masquerading as a level improvement.
EQ gain compensation means adjusting output level after an EQ move so the processed signal is not unfairly louder or quieter than the bypassed signal.
Boosting high mids, lows, or broad shelves can raise perceived loudness enough to bias your judgement.
After making an EQ change, bypass and match the level. If the move still helps at similar loudness, it is more likely a real tonal improvement.
This is especially important on mix bus EQ, vocal presence boosts, and low-end shaping.
