Release time decides how the compressor lets go after gain reduction.
Release is the time a compressor takes to return toward normal level after the signal falls below the threshold. Short release times recover quickly; longer release times hold gain reduction for more of the phrase.
The setting changes movement because the compressor is constantly reacting to the envelope of the source.
A release that is too fast can chatter, distort, or exaggerate room tone. A release that is too slow can keep the next hit suppressed and make the part feel flat.
For rhythmic material, the release often feels best when it breathes with the tempo instead of fighting the groove.
Watch how gain reduction returns between notes. If the meter never recovers, the compressor may be acting like constant level reduction rather than dynamic control.
