Attack and release set the timing of how a compressor reacts.
Attack controls how quickly compression begins after the signal crosses the threshold. Release controls how quickly the gain reduction returns after the signal falls back down.
Together, they decide whether compression catches transient peaks, reshapes sustain, or moves audibly with the groove.
Fast attack can soften drums, consonants, and pick noise. Slower attack lets the transient through before the compressor clamps down.
Fast release can add energy or pumping, while slow release can smooth the part but hold the level down between hits.
Start by matching attack to the transient you want to keep or control, then adjust release until the gain reduction recovers musically.
