Upward compression explained

Upward compression makes quiet details louder while leaving louder peaks more intact.

Lifting the quiet parts

Upward compression increases gain for material below a chosen range or threshold. Instead of pushing peaks down, it brings quieter details, sustain, room, or breath forward.

The result can feel denser and more present without the same peak flattening as heavy downward compression.

Detail also means noise

Raising quiet material can reveal headphone bleed, room tone, edits, breaths, and noise floor. That can be useful on drums or ambience, but distracting on exposed vocals.

Parallel compression often creates a similar effect by blending a heavily compressed signal under the original.

Check density and peaks

Upward compression may raise integrated or short-term loudness while peak level changes very little. That makes it easy to overdo if you judge only by peak meters.
