What is stereo width metering?

Stereo width metering helps separate useful space from unstable spread.

A view of left-right spread

Stereo width metering shows how much information is shared between channels and how much is spread to the sides.

It can help reveal whether a mix is narrow, balanced, exaggerated, or likely to have mono compatibility problems.

Wider is not automatically better

A very wide meter reading can be exciting, but it may come from phasey effects, stereo widening, or side-heavy low end that collapses in mono.

A narrower reading may be correct for focused vocals, kicks, bass, or dense arrangements.

Pair width with correlation and mono checks

Use width metering while toggling mono and checking stereo correlation. The goal is translation, not the widest possible picture.

Meter Core keeps width-related decisions near loudness and peak information so stereo excitement does not hide practical problems.
