What does a spectrum analyzer show?

A spectrum analyzer is a frequency map. It helps you confirm problems, but it should not replace listening.

Frequency energy on a display

A spectrum analyzer shows how much energy sits across the frequency range. Low frequencies appear on one side, high frequencies on the other, with level shown vertically.

Different analyzers use different smoothing, averaging, and speed settings, so the display can change even when the audio is the same.

Where it helps

Spectrum views help reveal low-end buildup, missing fundamentals, harsh bands, resonances, and frequency masking between instruments.

They are especially useful when comparing a mix against reference tracks at matched loudness.

Use it to verify what you hear

Start with listening, then use the analyzer to confirm the likely frequency area. Do not flatten the display just because it looks uneven.

Check the analyzer before and after major processing so you know whether a plugin solved the problem or simply made the signal louder.
