Turning down a post-insert fader hides output level without reducing the signal that overloaded earlier stages.
Cause
Inserts process the signal before the fader
Clip gain, input trim, EQ boosts, saturation, and compressor makeup gain can push the channel chain into overload before the signal reaches its fader. The fader can then show a safe output while distortion remains baked into the path.
Floating-point routing may prevent the channel itself from hard clipping, but plugins can still saturate or clip internally.
Check
Trace the first point where peaks change
Bypass or meter inserts one at a time from the source forward. Compare input and output around processors that add gain, especially in the loudest arrangement section.
Do not rely only on the post-fader channel meter when diagnosing an earlier overload.
Fix
Lower level before the overloaded stage
Reduce clip gain or input trim, remove unnecessary makeup gain, or use processor output controls to preserve headroom for the next insert. Rebalance with the channel fader afterward.
