My mix sounds good in the studio and bad everywhere else

This is the most common mixing problem there is, and it is not a talent problem. It is an information problem.

You mixed for one room without knowing it

Small rooms have large peaks and dips in the low end — often 10 dB or more at specific frequencies. You cannot hear the room directly; you hear the mix through it, and you correct for what you hear.

If your room exaggerates 60 Hz, you cut 60 Hz until it sounds right, and the exported mix is thin everywhere else. If your room has a dip at 80 Hz, you push bass into that hole and every other system plays it back as boom.

The same happens with width and loudness. Nearfields at close range flatter stereo effects that fall apart on a phone, and a quiet room hides the squashing that a noisy environment exposes.

Separate the room from the mix

Check the mix against things that do not care about your room: the mono fold, the amount of energy below 100 Hz, the balance between centre and sides, and a loudness-matched commercial reference.

If your mix disagrees with a reference in the same room on the same speakers, that gap is real — it survived the room, because both are being heard through it.

Headphones are a useful cross-check for low-end habits specifically, because they remove the room's low-frequency behaviour entirely, even though they add their own bias.

Use measurements as a second opinion

Measured feedback does not replace your ears — it tells you when your ears are being lied to by the room. The goal is not to mix by numbers, but to catch the three or four decisions the room reliably distorts.
