A simple level control before processing
Input trim changes signal level before a plugin, bus, or channel stage does its work. Unlike a fader, it often changes the behavior of processors that react to level.
Analog-modeled EQs, compressors, clippers, and saturators can sound very different when their input is pushed too hard.
Workflow
Separate tone from loudness
Use input trim to find the processor's comfortable range, then use output gain or fader moves to set the final balance. That keeps tone choices separate from level matching.
If a plugin has no obvious input meter, check the channel meter before and after the insert to understand what changed.

Watch the full chain
A small trim move at the start of a chain can change every downstream compressor, limiter, and clipper. Recheck true peak, loudness, and gain reduction after the move.
