A goniometer turns stereo signal movement into a visual phase and width display.
Definition
A picture of stereo movement
A goniometer plots left and right channel relationships over time. A narrow vertical shape suggests centered mono content, while wider shapes show stereo spread.
If the display leans heavily sideways or becomes unstable, it may point to balance, phase, or polarity issues worth checking by ear.
Mono
Width clues before the mono check
Very wide displays can be exciting, but they may also indicate content that disappears or changes tone when summed to mono.
A goniometer is not a replacement for listening in mono, but it can show where to investigate.
Workflow
Use it with correlation and listening
Compare the display during verses, choruses, and dense sections. Stereo behavior can change dramatically when effects, doubles, and low-end layers enter.
Meter Core helps keep stereo checks tied to level and loudness decisions so width changes do not mask balance problems.
