Stop louder from fooling your mix decisions

If every plugin sounds better because it is louder, the mix is being judged by level instead of tone.

The chain improves until it collapses

A compressor adds 2 dB. A saturator adds another 1 dB. An EQ boost adds more. Each move feels better in isolation, but the final bus is crowded, harsh, and hard to master.

That is the level bias problem: louder nearly always feels more exciting in a quick A/B, even when the actual tonal change is wrong.

Compare at similar loudness

Gain matching means trimming the processed signal so bypass and active states play at roughly the same perceived level. The goal is not mathematical perfection; it is a fair comparison.

Use short-term loudness, RMS, or careful output trim to keep decisions honest. Then judge whether the processor improved balance, movement, or clarity.

Watch cumulative level drift

Small level increases across a chain can steal headroom before the limiter. Meter each stage so the mix bus is not forced to solve hidden gain build-up.
