Compressor ratio explained

Ratio controls how much the compressor turns down signal above the threshold.

How much level gets reduced

A 2:1 ratio means that for every 2 dB above the threshold, roughly 1 dB comes out. Higher ratios reduce level more strongly and move closer to limiting.

Ratio only matters once the signal is crossing the threshold, so it works together with input level and threshold setting.

Gentle leveling or firm control

Lower ratios are common for smooth vocal, bass, and bus leveling. Higher ratios are useful when peaks need firmer control or when compression is part of the sound.

A high ratio with little gain reduction may be subtler than a low ratio driven hard, so the meter matters.

Judge the actual gain reduction

Watch how many decibels of gain reduction happen during loud moments and how the output peaks respond. The ratio number alone does not describe the result.
